Vinegar Cobbler
3 c. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 c. shortening water 1/2 c. cider vinegar 2 c. sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract
Stir together the flour and salt. Cut shortening in until crumbly. Use a fork to gradually mix in just enough water (about 1/2 c.), until the dough holds together. Divide into 3 equal portions. Use a lightly floured surface to roll out each portion into an oval, 1/8 inch thick, and 8 - 10 inches long. Cut lengthwise into 1 inch wide strips. Use an ovenproof 5 quart pot to combine vinegar, sugar, vanilla and 4 cups water. Bring to boil over high heat. Set aside 8 of the pastry strips. Tear the remaining strips into 1/2 inch long pieces. Drop the 1/2 inch pieces into the boiling liquid for 5 minutes. Remove the pot from heat. Crisscross remaining 8 strips on top of the cooked pieces. Bake at 425 for 25 - 30 minutes or until pastry on top is golden brown. Serve warm or hot. Makes 6 - 8 servings.

I think this is the recipe I have been looking for that my mother used to make except she used to roll the dough out and cover it with cinnamon/sugar mixture and pats of butter. She'd then roll it into logs and place them in a glass cake pan and cover with the liquid mixture and more butter. Then bake and serve warm. Thank you for helping solve my delimma. I've been looking for a long time for this. I never even thought to look under cobblers.

The description you just gave for the way your Mom made her desert is called "Vinegar Rolls". My grandmother made a Vinegar Cobbler that was fantastic but it is some what different than Vinegar Rolls. The Seniors Citizen Center here where I live put out a recipe book years ago and my neighbor submitted hers for Vinegar Rolls and will be glad to post it or send it to you as soon as I can locate my book (misplaced in shuffle of remodeling).

I would really appreciate the recipe for this. I have been trying to find it for a very long time now. My mother and grandmother are both gone now and my mother-in-law thought she had it but hasn't been able to find it. My email is: sharronweedon@hotmail.com

The Vinegar Pie was submitted by my Aunt Eula McGowan who died last Sept. 2002, and though I don't remember anyone but my grandmother Stephens making Vinegar Cobbler or anything sweet with vinegar, I can testify to my Aunt being a great cook.
I have tried the above Vinegar Rolls recipe and it is very good. This lady though in her late eighties is living.

Thank You!!!!!! . That is the recipe I have been looking for. The only thing different is that my mom was always pressed for time so she'd leave the rolls their full length and bake them. Then after they were done we'd slice it and serve it. Again, Thank You ;D ;D
