Sweet Hearts 1 1/4 cups All Purpose Flour 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter 1/2 cup Maraschino Cherries, well drained and chopped 1/4 cup Sliced Almonds 1/4 cup Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips 3 tbsp White Sugar 1/2 tsp Shortening Preheat the oven to 325 F. In a medium bowl combine the flour and sugar. Cut in the butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Stir in the cherries. On a lightly floured board, knead the dough until all of the ingredients are well combined and the dough is smooth. Roll out the dough to a 1/2 inch thickness. Using a 1 1/2 inch heart cookie cutter, cut the dough into hearts. Place each cookie 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the cookies are set to touch. Remove the cookies and place on a rack to cool. Evenly spread out the almonds on waxed paper. In a small saucepan, heat the chocolate and shortening just until melted, stirring occasionally. Using a pastry brush, coat the bottom of each cookie and then press the cookie onto the almonds. Place on a rack, almonds up to cool.
