Karen in TX: the distance as the Crow flies is very small - about 40 miles. Unfortunately to get to Mauchline involves lots of motorway driving followed by never ending winding roads. It could be motored to for "a picnic day out" from our home. It is in the County of East Ayrshire and is famous in Scottish History. The village of Catrine is in South East Ayrshire. Catrine stands on the banks of the River Ayr. The thriving cotton industry was centred and grew up around the river. It operated until the 1970s. Rabbie Burns - the famous Scottish Bard's wife, Jean Armour. came from Mauchline. Try these links: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauchline www.catrine-ayrshire.co.uk/Sylvia446

Hi Karen,
Catrine is on the West coast of Scotland and we are on the East Coast. Without actually doing the trip I can't give you an accurate distance. In our younger and fitter days we used to do dog shows at Ayr Community Centre.
Is your cousin married to a Scot? They have chosen a superb part of the country to live in.

Yes, he is. Their dads were in the Air Force and were stationed together in Germany when they both were born. When my cousin got out of school and the military, he sent for Maureen to come to the states. She stayed one summer and decided she didn't want to live here. He went back with her and has been there for 35 years. He loves it. They have a boy (30 years old) that I haven't gotten to know. Maureen recently sent me Maw Broom's Cookbook, which I love.

Hi again Karen,
What a lovely story. He obviously likes Scotland and the Scots. Has your cousin or his wife logged on to Nancy's newsletter? Have you ever made the trip to Scotland?
I got the Maw Broon's and the Oor Wullie cookbooks from my oldest son for Christmas. I love all the copies of old hand-written recipes in the so called margins.

Maureen doesn't like the computer, so she hasn't been to Nancy's. I've never been to Scotland either. They visit me every few years though. My cousin works for an airlines so is able to travel alot cheaper than I could.

I have a friend who isn't into computers, but she likes to read the newsletter, her DH sets everything up for her and she is quite content. She's just got the hang of texting, she's had a mobile for about 8 years.
I'm sure your cousin and Maureen have told you on their many trips that living here in Scotland is completely different from living in America. I was exhausted after a 19 day stay in California, life there seems to be like helter skelter fast living.

Yeah! He gets really nervous when I'm driving him around in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, area. It's a very fast pace. Actually, it makes me nervous, too!

Hi,
Your last statement makes me feel a whole lot better. We thought our age had something to do with being scaredy cats.
We experienced really fast and reckless driving when we lived in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and we got used to it, but we were much younger then. I'm not saying the driving in California was reckless, I really wouldn't know, I had my eyes tight shut must of the time.
The only time I felt secure on the roads, was when we went to Nappa Valley, we all traveled in a stretch limousine with dark tinted windows! LOL.

Hi ddddyyyy,
Great to hear from you again. Have you tried any of the recipes on the boards or do you just prefer to have a chat?
There's a lot of wonderful people pulled together by Nancy and I hope you enjoy the friendship here.
