My grandmother makes this anytime we have a family gathering and it is one of a kind, it sounds basic but it is the best chocolate cake you will ever eat!!
2 cups flour 2 cup granulated sugar 1 stick margarine 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 4 heaping tbsp. cocoa 1 cup water 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Combine flour & sugar in mixing bowl. Mix well. In a saucepan, put margarine, shortening, cocoa, & water and bring to a rapid boil. Pour over flour & sugar mixture, mixing gradually. Put soda in buttermilk & add with remaining ingredients. Add pecans if necessary. Mix & turn into a greased and floured 13x9 pan. Bake 30 minutes at 400 degrees. Make icing 5 minutes before cake is done.
Icing 1 stick margarine or butter 4 tbsp. cocoa 6 tbsp. milk 1 box powdered sugar 1 tsp. vanilla In saucepan, combine margarine, cocoa & milk. Bring to boil, stirring constantly to prevent sticking. Remove from heat. Spread on hot cake.

This cake sounds wonderful but I have a couple of questions.
The directions call for adding soda to the buttermilk but soda is not listed in the ingredients.
The directions for the icing do not tell you when to add the powdered sugar or vanilla.
Would you please clarify? Thank you. dd - Wichita, KS

This isn't a cake that I have tried, but would assume a level tsp of soda would be the measurement. I think it might be a way of turning the buttermilk into a sourer flavour.
I personally think it's one of those things where the recipe has been passed down and down and it could be today's commercial buttermilk is fine on it's own.
