There is a product called Zatarain's New Orleans Style Gumbo Base that tastes almost as good (and sometimes better) as any I have tasted in my area (90 miles from New Orleans.) A friend of mine entered his gumbo (Zatarain's) in a friendly gumbo cook-off and won second place! Just follow the directions on the box and add the meat of your choice. My favorite is chicken and smoked sausage.
At last I'm free from the shame of not being able to cook up a great gumbo! I can hold my head high!
Oh, by the way --- some folks use (not necessarily in gumbo) a spicy Creole seasoning called "Tony Chachere's." It is pronounced "Tony SA-sher-ees." Just in case anyone is interested.
