Title: Old Family Recipe for Fruit Salad
Description: This is a wonderful fruit salad that we've been making in our family for a LONG time. Can't ever remember a time as a young child not seeing this salad! I've never seen one exactly like this > close, but different... Add the fruits that appeal to you, as it is easy to blend all with the marshmallow base. Nuts are optional also, again a flavor that I just don't like with my fruit salad, but some adore nuts! So feel free to 'tweek' to suit your own tastebuds!
Ingredients:
4- egg yolks separated
1 tsp. dry mustard
1 cup boiling milk
1 lb. of marshmallows (I always end up adding more!)
1 can crushed pineapple (*add to your preferred taste > I like LOTS!)
2 whipping creams > slightly whipped
Nuts (optional) > and your choice
*fruits of my choice: I use red grapes (cut in half, de-seed, slice in 1/2 again), sometimes I combine using green grapes too, oranges, small pieces of diced red apples, 1 large can of fruit thingytail (always check over the fruits first to pick out any bad pieces), and whatever else looks good at that particular season! Just remember to drain any fruits from the cans that you use, as you don't want to add any liquid! Seriously, add whatever YOU like> mandarin oranges, sliced peaches, kiwi, etc. etc.>>> it will all work..!
Directions: Take the 4 egg yolks and beat. Mix in 1 tsp. of dry mustard, and pour in 1 cup of boiling milk. Cook while stiring over the heat, until this mixture has thickened. Take off of the fire and pour over the 1 lb. of minature marshmallows. (Let cool). As I said above I LIKE marshmallows and to end up with a large bowl of fruit salad when I'm done, so I add more because the heat of this mixture really blends them down. (Just add and stir, making sure that the base blends and coats the new marshmallows.) After this has cooled, add in the crushed pineapple (I add more, some people like less!), and other fruits of your choice and nuts. Slightly whip your 2 small containers of whipping cream, add to mixture, and let stand overnight before serving... I add more grapes to garnish and add color to the top of the fruit salad...
Hope that you enjoy! Baking Bud
