I just received this in my e-mail and thought it might be of interest to you.
Hi, I just started the 40-30-30 plan and am having success but
one problem I have is can't drink my decaffe coffee (only two
cups a day) without cream or nondairy creamer. My husband says
I have coffee with my cream.
Is there something out there that would serve the purpose and
not have calories or very little. I just can't drink it black.
Any help will be helpful.
Carol
Hi Carol,
Congratulations on your success.
I'm assuming you use real cream in your coffee. If so your two
cups per day with two tablespoons of cream is adding about 146
calories and 14 grams of fat a day to your diet. If you're using
more than two tablespoons per cup of course it would be more.
My first thought was go ahead and enjoy your coffee with cream
and don't worry about it. Pick another eating habit you're not
so passionate about and go after that. However, 146 calories a
day is a lot and if you really want to do something about it you
have some options.
Elimination:
Tapering off is a method I like to recommend to eliminate habits
that we have and would like to get rid of. In your case you would
need to actually measure the cream that you are currently using
and then gradually start reducing the amount. Stretch it out as
long as you like. Each small reduction is lowering your daily
calorie intake without making you feel deprived. You're still
enjoying your coffee with cream.
Any reduction that you can permanently make is a success. If you
reduce your cream to 1 tablespoon per cup and decide to stop there
you have eliminated 73 calories per day from your diet with a
lifestyle change that's yours forever.
I used this method to totally eliminate cream and sugar from the
coffee I drink. Now I want to eliminate coffee all together. One
step at a time and keep on stepping. Ha.
Substitution:
Using a substitution for the cream is another option. I don't
know how you feel about non-dairy creamers but my thoughts tend
to lean toward the negative.
Did you know that Land O'Lakes makes a fat free half and half?
I don't regularly use cream but I did buy some for a product
evaluation. It's really pretty good and the list of contents
doesn't read like some chemical formula. It's primary ingredients
are milk and non-fat milk. And it's only 20 calories per two
tablespoons with 0 fat.
If you could make this substitution immediately then you've cut
106 calories and 14 grams of fat from your daily diet. That's a
pretty significant lifestyle change.
Whatever substitution you choose I would suggest that you still
use the tapering off method. If you use the fat free half and
half start by mixing a portion of real cream with a portion of
the fat free. Eventually you would be using all fat free half
and half and you will probably have never noticed the difference.
I love milk and drink it regularly with meals. I used this method
to switch from whole milk to fat free milk and I'm now happy as
can be with fat free. (Hey, I made a jingle. Happy as can be with
fat free. Ha.)
Since you said you couldn't drink your coffee without creamer
this is probably your best choice.
Carol whatever you decide to do about your coffee, you still
deserve a big pat on the back. You're actually working at weight
loss and not just dreaming about it. It's hard work and it's work
that most of us will have to do for the rest of our lives. But
you're doing it. Congratulations!
Never Give Up,
Jim
