This is a recipe that has been in my family for years that I modified to the crockpot, which keeps the kitchen a lot cooler although the same can be made on the stove just simmering for 2-3 hours.
Burgers
2 lbs ground meat(can be any type or combo I have used turkey, beef, pork and veal) 2 green peppers diced small 1 onion diced 1 1/2 c italian seasoned bread crumbs 2 eggs or 1/2 c skim milk
BBQ sauce
2 c catsup 1/2 c cider vinegar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 Tbl dry mustard 2 Tbls worcestshire sauce 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 tsp powdered garlic 1/2 tsp powdered onion 1/2 tsp ground chipolte powder 1 - 1 1`/2 cups beer or water
1. Make BBQ sauce. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl.
2. Make burgers in large bowl mix meat, peppers, onion and bread crumbs together. After these are combined add eggs or milk. Shape into 12 patties.
3. Layer patties in crockpot. Pour BBQ sauce over and place lid on. Cook on low for 4-6 hours.
4. Serve on buns with additional sauce on side.
Cooks Tips
1. I often make these a day before a picnic and refrigerate overnight, the morning of the picnic I skim all the harden far off the top of the sauce before packing in cooler.
2. Purchased BBQ sauce can be used but I normally find that I need 2 bottles and 1 bottle of water to cover burgers.
2. My family likes these vinegary so you may want to cut vinegar to 1/4 cup if you don't like vinegar
