i don't actually remember where the recipe for "savoury mince in a jar" came from ~ all i know is that i have made it for as long as i can remember.. i do know that my mother never made it.. so i must have got it from elsewhere... if you decide to make it.. these are a couple of the rules you need to know...
never use a screw top lid on your jar... alfoil and a rubber band is perfect... [the screw top lid will form a vacuum seal and you will not be able to remove it until it cools]
always start with cold water in the pot and the jar in the cold water... if you use warm or hot water the jar will crack..
SAVOURY MINCE IN A JAR...
ingredients
1lb [500gms] lean mince beef
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 dessertspoon anchovy or fish sauce
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
a good pinch of cayenne pepper
large tomato chopped fine..
1 smallish carrot grated
2 slices bacon chopped fine
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 medium diced onion
1 dessertspoon cornflour mixed through..
method
place all ingredients in a clean glass jar cover with alfoil and secure with a rubber band..
place jar in pot and add cold water to about 2" from the top and lid on if it will fit... [not necessary to have lid, but you must check water levels every hour or so, if no lid]
bring to the boil ~ reduce heat and simmer for 3 hours...
if you need to add water ~ make sure that it is boiling water that you add..
serve with mashed potato or sippets of toast..
this is the tastiest savoury mince i have ever had and i think it is because all the flavours are sealed in the jar...
