Years ago, and I mean years ,as I am past 80 now, we would watch through the kitchen window as my Mother pulled taffy where she stood on the porch. She wore a heavy coat ,as the cold weather was a sign of taffy making ! She had buttered her hands like a glove, picked up the hank of taffy, and one of us opened the door for her. As she began to work the candy, the loop kept getting longer until her arms were at full reach. This continued til she judged the candy was the right consistency and color, a creamy white. She brought it in and gave us each a portion to roll in a long rope, on the kitchen table, which was quickly done, and the candy was cut in pieces about an inch and a half long, put on a tray and taken outside to harden. Sometimes we wrapped each piece in little bits of waxed paper ! It must be cooked to a hardball stage, cooled enough not to burn your hands and pulled in as cold a place as you can find, and a strong armed person should do the pulling,as it takes a lot of strength. ( Mom washed our clothes on a scrub board and rinsed and wrung them by hand. She was a strong-armed woman !) She would do this about 3 times a winter, as that was the only time we made taffy.
I have searched for her recipe and I know I have it bu it eludes me at th moment. As soon as I find it, I will send it to you, through this newsletter. Vida, from Ohio
