Hi, Nancy! This is for Lois who is having brown sugar getting hard in her gift jars.
I picked up a tip from somewhere about putting an apple slice in with brown sugar to soften it up.
Possibly, what she could do is just add the apple slice and let it sit in the jar for a short time after she's opened it and before trying to make the cookies.

Hi Nancy, This is for Lois who was searching for a way to keep brown sugar from hardening,
my mom always put a small apple in with the brown sugar. I've tried it and it works, ,it does not give the sugar an off flavor either. Hope this helps. Catherine in MA

From Nancy's News Letter March 17th, 2003 I think, everyone has a hardened box of brown sugar in the pantry, it can be softened by microwaving it, then place the apple slice in it so it doesn't re-harden. It is best to upon opening a box of brown sugar to put it in an airtight jar. Hope I helped somebody, Betty in New York

This is for the person who wanted to know how to keep brown sugar from going hard.
My suggestion is to store it in the freezer. I keep it this way all the time and it never goes hard. Keeps fresh and soft.

From Nancy's News Letter March 17th, 2003 Hi Nancy, Love your Newsletter and the new format. This is for Lois who was searching for a way to keep brown sugar from hardening. She could obtain the same success if she placed a piece of orange peel, or apple peel or even a piece of fresh bread in with the brown sugar. Any of these will make hardened brown sugar soft again. I've tried them all at one time or another. Michelle in Ottawa, Canada

trouble with brown sugar hardening. I keep mine in a Tupperware canister (no, I am not a Tupperware dealer) and this keeps the sugar at the same moisture level as when I take it out of the bag. If I have an extra bag I put that in the freezer until I need it. I live alone so one bag can last a long time. I have never had any get hard stored in this container. I am sure any other air tight container would work well. I just happen to have a set of Tupperware canisters.
