The next time you have an extended trip in Scotland and within the Edinburgh area try a superfast ferry trip to Bruges - you can go for 3, 4, or 5 days. It is one of the best no problem trips you can take. A bus takes you straight on to the ship then into a lift to your cabin (book outside) and the same on your return. Remember you are on the superb ship for 1 day going and 1 day coming back. The ship leaves from Rosyth. We did this a few years ago we did the 4day trip (birthday pressie) - next time it will be the 5 day or even longer if possible. The History, architecture, Food, Belgian chocolate and canal trips are superb. You do have to spend a lot of time with your head pointed upwards - so as not to miss a lot of gems. I am not into visiting castles and historic type things, but I was so impressed by the medieaval architecture and by the fact that they the Belgians are a little akin to the British of the past - divided, there are Dutch and French speakers. Off all the short trips we have done, Amsterdam - Nope, never again, if you are aged under 35 perhaps. Bruges yea - I loved it, we did try the chips and mayonnaise in the Market Sq with Belfry, you can't visit Bruges without this indulgence. Don't miss one of the canal trips and take in the beautiful Flemish architecture. The people were friendly and very helpful - shame they couldn't tell the difference between Scots and Irish. We were given directions to a Scottish owned bar/restaurant. It was nice - but the guy who owned it was Northern Irish and spoke so fast - I still to this day haven't a clue what he was on about. Anyway all this aside this thing about the famous chips with mayonnaise (you haven't been to Bruges if you haven't indulged) - when I returned as of course is my trait - I started my little tweaks and ended up with shoestring potatoes which you can find under that name on this site. I would guess if you are on WW, you will just sit back and watch your guests enjoy.
