As mentioned in today's newsletter I hope to help brand newcomers with little keyboard experience. Most of these shortcuts are in your computer manual, but every new user just wants to get going. Remember I am not a former tutor or teacher - so be gentle with me - I really am trying to help.
If your computer doesn't automatically save your documents, Ctrl and the S key pressed together saves the document.
If you are at the bottom of a fairly large document i.e. the newsletter and want to check something out at the beginning of the document, press Ctrl and the Home key or vice versa for the bottom Ctrl and End. The same applies if you press Ctrl and PgUP or Ctrl and PgDn except it will go up or down a page at a time. You don't have to use the scroll bar, in fact I never do. Use the up and down arrows.
If at anytime you can't find what you want to do, press the F1 key and the help menu will come up on the right hand side of your screen. It is really good, just type in what you want and it will give you a list to choose from.
Instead of using the edit menu everytime you want to cut, copy and paste, if you highlight whatever it is you want, then Ctr C will copy the text onto the clipboard, then click where you want the text to appear and press Ctrl V it will copy the text. If you want to move the text use Ctrl X it will then be removed from the document and placed on the clipboard then position your cursor and click where you want the text to appear and press Ctrl V and the text will appear where you want it. Any text placed on your clipboard by any method will stay on your clipboard until the next time you copy or cut text on top of it. Sounds a little convoluted, but once you start using the shortcuts and get used to them you won't go back to the old method.
I want to check this out before you use it, but I think a quick way of shutting down in an emergency i.e. if you hear thunder or for some reason you computer doesn't respond (goes into a loop) press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. I will confirm this as soon as possible.
I think that is enough to be getting on with, if you or any of the more experienced keyboard users can help anyone with their tips, we would all love to hear from you.
