Steak n’ Shake® Genuine Chili
“Steak n’ Shake® makes so many wonderful varieties of chili, and they are all so delicious, that their menu has it’s own distinct ‘Chili’ section. The ‘Genuine Chili’ is the basic variety, and it’s easy to make with some ground beef, kidney beans, a few seasonings, and the secret ingredient - Coca Cola®.”
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (10 1/2 ounces) can condensed onion soup
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 ((8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup Coca Cola® <br>
1 cup fresh diced onion
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1. Heat the oil in a large stockpot, over medium heat. When it is hot, add the ground beef salt. Sauté the beef for several minutes, browning it, and crumbling it into tiny pieces as it cooks. Try to make the beef particles about the size of rice; no bigger. Then, when all the beef has been crumbled, cover the pot securely, and reduce the heat to low. Let it cook over low heat for about 20 minutes.
2. After 20 minutes, pour the can of soup into a blender. Blend for about 1 minute on high speed. Then add the blended soup to the beef. Cover again and let simmer for another 5 minutes.
3. Then, add chili powder, cumin, pepper, cocoa powder, beans, tomato paste, tomato sauce and cola. Stir well to completely mix all the ingredients together. Continue to cook, while stirring slowly, until all the ingredients are cooked thorough and the mixture has thickened considerably. This will take about 10-15 minutes.
4. Mix together the two cheeses by sifting in a large mixing bowl. Pour equal amounts of the chili into 4 individual serving bowls. Sprinkle the top of each bowl with 1/4 cup freshly diced onions. Then put about 1 cup of the cheese mixture in a pile on the center of the chili. Serve immediately. Serves 4.
