Hi Nancy, This is in response to someone's questions about holiday foods. I grew up in the South. My family is originally from Alabama. When I moved to Minnesota and met my now husband, Dave, we had to blend his culture (South Dakota) with mine. In my family and in a lot of the South, rice is what's served with turkey and gravy. We'd have mashed potatoes and gravy sometimes, but rice and gravy was more typical. Dave had only had rice served at breakfast with milk and sugar!!!! So for holidays, what would it be? Potatoes? or Rice? We kind of alternate or when I'm feeling especially generous, we have both!
Of course there are other conflicts over holiday traditions and foods but this was the big one. We've survived 23 years of marriage, so I guess we're compromising pretty well. Anybody else with this kind of "problem"? Gerry now in Seattle

Wow how different countries are! I found it interesting that you serve rice with turkey but being a rice lover I wouldn't complain Here in Aussieland typically Xmas dinners were always an assortment of roast meats, cold ham, loads of baked, steamed, and/or boiled veggies served with a rich gravy, but times and the heat we experience in December has seen changes to that. Many opt for salads now but many also retain the traditional fare. A couple of years ago I served up an asian meal that went down a treat. My inlaws always surprised with something different and I think it's the very fact that we never knew what we would have that made it all the more interesting. But this past Xmas we had the traditional meal as it was the first Xmas together with my family for 7 years.
