also at the end of the season (at the time of your first heavy frost) you can pull the plants up by the roots. Then hang the plant upside down somewhere cool (50º- 65º ) and the tomatoes that are still on the vine will ripen . It takes a little while of course, but the tomatoes still have that vine ripened flavor.
