Chris suggested that pancake syrup might be the US equivalent to Australian golden Syrup, so try it for this recipe, a real Aussie favourite served with lashings of whipped cream.
Dumplings: Sift 1 cup self raising flour with a pinch of salt, then rub in 40g butter until fine and crumbly, make a well in the centre and add 1 egg and 1 tbs milk (mixed together) to make a soft dough.
Syrup: Put 2 cups water into a pan with 40g butter, 2 tbs (golden syrup/pancake syrup) 1 cup sugar and 1/4 cup lemon juice (optional). Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves, then bring to boil.
Drop dsp fulls of dough into syrup mix, cover pan and reduce heat to a simmer for 20 mins, or until a knife inserted into dumpling comes out clean. Serve immediately with a little syrup drizzled over and whipped cream.
