Hi Everyone, Chef Jim here. I'm the new moderator of this group and I'm really enthusiastic about the task. I've been a student of healthy living and a low fat lifestyle for over 10 years now. It wasn't by choice, it was forced on me by a heart attack. But over time it has become my passion. About four years ago I started an e-mail newsletter about the subject so I'm involved on a daily basis. I don't consider myself an expert but I do feel that over the last 10 years I've acquired enough information that I can be useful here. Feel free to contact me about anything pertaining to the board. I want to go on a diet. A friend told me about the low-carbohydrate diet. I don't know much about it but have heard some bad things about it. The other one I am interested in is Weight Watchers but it seems expensive because you have to pay even if you don't go to the meetings. Can you tell me something about safe diets to go on and what expenses are involved in each?

Hi Julie, The phrase "going on a diet" immediately brings to mind pain and deprivation. Something that you must endure for a period of time before you can go back to being happy again. That's the reason that most diets don't work. As soon as you go back to being happy again the weight comes back with a vengeance. Weight Watchers has a very good program. They advocate making lifestyle changes that you can stick with forever. Not pain and deprivation. But they are expensive. You can begin making your own lifestyle changes without the help of Weight Watchers. Evaluate your current eating habits by keeping a food journal for a few days. Write down everything that you consume and be honest with yourself. Try to include a weekend in the few days. After you've completed your evaluation you can choose to eliminate one or two of the areas where you are consuming lots of calories. The changes you make should be changes that you can stick with for life. For instance changing a snack from a candy bar and a soft drink to a piece of fresh fruit. Knowledge plus action equals power.
