Looking for candied yam recipe

My mother made a candied yam that had a crisp (crystalized) sugar coating on the yams.

These were really delicious and no one in the family remembers how she made them. I'm sure she made them just like her mother made them.

I'm hoping someone knows how to achieve the above results.

I recently came across this recipe in the Ceil Dyer book, Best recipes from the back of boxes, bottles, cans and jars (1979)

Candied Sweet Potatoes
"Southerners unite! This is the real thing--this recipe for sweet potatoes has remained a popular standby on the Karo Dark Corn Syrup label for years."

1 cup Karo Dark Corn Syrup
1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 Tablespoons corn oil margarine
12 medium sweet potatoes, cooked, peeled, halved lengthwise

In small saucepan, heat corn syrup, brown sugar and margarine to boiling; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Pour 1/2 cup of the syrup into 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Arrange potatoes, overlapping if necessary, in syrup. Top with remaining syrup. Bake in 350*F. oven, basting often, for 20 minutes, until well glazed. Makes 12 servings.
