LEMON CRACKERS
2 1/2 cups white sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup lard 1 pint milk 5 cents worth oil of lemon (1 dram or 1 tablespoon] 3 cents worth bakers ammonia (1 ounce or 2 tablespoons) enough flour to make a soft dough
Dissolve bakers ammonia in milk. Beat eggs, sugar, lard and salt. Add milk and enough flour to make a soft dough. Roll on floured surface, not too thin, and cut in squares. Bake on cookie sheet at 450ยบ for 8-10 minutes
Source: This was my Grandmothers recipe. She has been gone almost 65 years. I have typed it like the original recipe except for an explanation of the amounts for the bakers amonia and lemon oil.
