Turnips Revisited
1 rutabaga (2 lb) 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 4 cooking apples (2 lb) 3 TBS flour 3 TBS butter salt and pepper
Peel and cube rutabaga. Cook 15 to 20 minutes in boiling salted water until tender. Mix together 1/4 cup of the sugar and cinnamon. Peel and slice apples thinly. Toss with sugar mixture. Set aside. Mix together flour and remaining sugar. Cut in 2 TBs butter until crumbly. Drain rutabaga and mash with remaining butter. Season to taste. Spread 1/3 in greased 8 cup casserole dish. Spread 1/2 of the apple mixture on top. Repeat layers ending with rutabaga. Sprinkle flour mixture evenly over top. Bake uncovered in 350*F oven for 30 to 40 minutes or until apples are tender and top is golden brown. Serves 8.
