1 3/4 c. flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 2 tbsp. shortening 2/3 c. milk 2 c. hot oil Honey, if desired Cinnamon sugar, if desired
Combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until like cornmeal. Add milk, mixing just until dough holds together in a ball. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 1 minute. Cover dough and let rest 1 hour. Roll into a 12x15 inch rectangle, about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 3 inch squares. Heat oil in deep fryer to 370-380 degrees. Drop squares a few pieces at a time into oil, turning at once so they will puff evenly. Brown on both sides.
