1 lb. fresh okra 1 c. buttermilk 1 egg 2 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 2 c. vegetable oil
Wash and trim okra. Slice into 1/4 inch pieces. Heat vegetable oil in deep fryer or skillet to about 350 degrees. Mix buttermilk and egg. Mix flour and salt. Dip okra pieces into buttermilk wash, then roll in flour. Deep-fry okra until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Lift from oil with slotted spoon. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately. Serves 4-6.

I am a Southern girl, now residing in the PNW...Okra is only found in grocery stores, frozen, I am having trouble getting the corn meal to stick, even after allowing it to thaw...any suggestions?

You might try the triple treatment method.
First you dredge the rinsed and cut Okra in flour. Then dunk into a bowl of eggwhites. And then into the cornmeal.
What I like to do is put the cornmeal in a ziploc bag, drop the flour/egg treated okra into it, and then shake to coat well. Then I put the bag in the refrigerator until the oil is ready to deep fry.
As for finding fresh Okra, sorry it's so difficult in the Northwest. A neighbor of mine had some to spare from their garden, and I was given two pounds!
