I had pumpernickel yesterday. We had some Russian eggplant spread on it, I read that they go together.
Do you mean pumpernickel or a dark rye bread? I hope I am not imagining that I have eaten dark rye bread in the past.

I am not sure how pastrami on rye is supposed to be made or if you mean something else. We have for lunch light rye with pastrami or beef, with hot mustard, gerkins or pickled cucumber and grated cheese. Our own variation is to add oyster sauce, an Asian ingredient, but it tastes nice.
